Back to the Future told us there would be flying skateboards by 2015. They were wrong, but XTND, Inc has just launched a Kickstarter for the XTND Board, their electric longboard skateboard, which they say is revolutionizing urban travel. Compare the XTND Board to the Baja Board we previously featured.
With a top speed of 28mph, it’s a viable alternative to biking or sitting in traffic. It features an AI system that actually collects data about the way you ride, and adapts according to your own strengths and weaknesses. Step recognition lets it know who is riding. It’s built of carbon fiber, titanium and space-grade foam. Safety sensors keep it from moving when no one is standing on it, and it automatically brakes should you step or fall off. It will even automatically slow down should you be going too fast for your skill level.
Ambient light sensors turn the built-lights on and off automatically, while the integrated navigation and route optimization helps you get to your destination in the shortest, fastest way possible – avoiding as much terrain and hills as possible to save battery. There are built-in security features, you help deter other people from riding it, and the XTND automatically communicates with the app, which keeps an eye on battery, maintenance and other features.
Range tops out at 12.5 miles on a single charge, and the batteries automatically recharge as you go downhill using regenerative braking. An included remote turns the board on and off with a single touch, and the recharging the battery is completely wireless.
XTND has already raised almost twice their goal on Kickstarter, and the boards should begin shipping January 2018….we’ll be grabbing one for sure.
