Ever been hiking through the mountains – or driving across the plains – and witnessed a beautiful peak towering in the distance…but been totally unable to find out what mountain it is? Italian-designed app PeakVisor – which recently became free to download from the App Store, will make sure that’s never a problem again.
Peakvisor: Virtual Mountain Guide
PeakVisor is your Personal Mountain Guide.
It’s an interactive app from Italian maker Routes Software that identifies mountain peaks via “augmented reality” with your phone’s camera, pulling up that mountain’s name and altitude. The app will access and render a 3d model of that peak and the surrounding landscape, giving you a detailed, interactive guide. Use these 3D maps to plan hikes, tag mountains and other landmarks in photos, and “teleport” – in their words – to any location for future trip planning.
Free and Premium Options
Routes recently made the PeakVisor app totally free to download and use, instead introducing a Premium subscription plan for dedicated peakbaggers who want features. Premium features include Unlimited Offline Capabilities, Custom Trails and import of GPX trails. There’s even nifty Professional Photography Tools like sunlight emulation and photo planning. To sweeten the deal, Routes tosses in an automatic 1-week free trial of premium features upon installation.
Nifty and helpful. Purists may simply doesn’t see the need for apps in the great outdoors, but tech-savvy adventurers should be all over PeakVisor. It covers all the major and minor mountain ranges of the world. With a 4.6-star rating on the App Store, it must be doing something right.
