2019’s Best Budget Full-Suspension MTB: FantomDS Comp

FantomDS Comp 29 Blaze Orange

Created and built by Motobecane, who delivers their bikes direct-to-consumer and is able to cut out the middleman to ensure better, cheaper bikes, the FantomDS Comp delivers excellent value – a full suspension bike for just over $1000.

That’s tough to find on its face, as “budget” and “full suspension” don’t usually go together and means that the FantomDS is a real feat; it manages to pack all the goodies and performance you’re expecting from a quality full-suspension without the “full” price tag that most of them demand.

This performance starts with a 7005 Kinesis Engineered Aluminum frame, with 100mm travel in the rear thanks to the RockShox RS-Monarch RL-C2 fork and the RS 30Gold fork in the front – both of which can be adjusted or locked out as the rider prefers.

The frame is “hydroformed,” with tapered head tubes that create a geometry perfect for downhill and off-road racing; very responsive and excellent at handling all kinds of single track and cross country riding.

The lightweight aluminum frame is complemented by a Shimano 3×10 drivetrain with an 11-36 cassette. And you get your choice of 27.5” or 29” wheels, so you can tear up the big terrain or opt for the speed and acceleration of the smaller size (Nano tires provide good grip without slowing you down).

Finally, the FantomDS includes Motobecane’s TCS Technology – their Tubeless Compatible System, which is compatible with any UST tire and works to reduce flats and bike tires. And tubeless rims can often cost half as much as this bike itself, so this is a pretty sweet deal alone.

For the price, you’re not going to find a lot of Full-Suspension bikes cheaper than the FantomDS. The quality and engineering precision are there, while the direct-to-consumer model they use means that those of us without tons of disposable income can still get on the trails.
