“Alexa, vacuum the house.” Yes, it turns out Alexa is good for something besides listening to music and accidentally ordering stuff off Amazon. IRobot has been around for a while, but if you are a big fan of Amazon Echo and smarthomes, or if you are just extremely lazy, then you need the newest version of the IRobot Roomba 690. It’s built on the reliable Roomba 690 body but now includes Wifi – letting you connect to your smartphone, and then to your Echo, commanding it to begin vacuuming with nothing more than your voice. You can the use the IRobot Home app to schedule cleanings, as well, get tips and support, turn on push notifications and receive real time updates on cleaning jobs.
The Roomba 690 is capable of cleaning your whole home, automatically adjusting itself to carpet, rugs, tile, hardwood, and laminate floors. It uses a 3-stage process, which loosens, lifts and sucks up dirt and debris (even hair) from the floor, and is low enough to fit under couches and beds no problem. Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barrier has two modes to manage cleaning area; Virtual Wall mode keeps your robot in the rooms you want cleaned and out of the ones you don’t, and the Halo mode prevents it from hitting valuable items in the room. When it’s done, the Roomba automatically returns itself to it’s docking station and recharges until the next use; a single charge can last up to 60 minutes.
The ultimate in innovation, or a study in laziness? We don’t really care either way, we’d just like to play with it. So grab a beer and a book – there’s housecleaning to do.
