15 Sep Downsizing: The 2017 Version of “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”
We surely don’t mean this post to be a political statement–Gear for Life is a site to visit to escape the political rhetoric of the world! This just looks like a cool, funny movie. Something as nonsense as the classic “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.” Downsizing takes a more serious look at what the writer determines are cultural issues.
Faced with the thought of over population in the world (??), Downsizing offers the solution as shrinking people. When scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall as a solution to over-population, Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in order to get small and move to a new downsized community–a choice that triggers life-changing adventures. The added bonus of being downsized to five inches is savings will stretch further in this downsized existence, allowing them to live a life of luxury. Rotten Tomatoes‘ reviews are typically positive and negative. Even though some view Downsizing as attempting to address some political issues, most reviews put it more in the category of satire, comedy.
Alexander Payne is the idea behind the movie as writer and director. The movie carries some A-Listers: Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, John Sedeikis, Alec Baldwin, and Neil Patrick Harris. The anticipated release is December 22, 2017, just in time for some holiday, brainless movie watching. Hey, shrinking may sound pretty good to us during the December gift-giving season. So prepare to grab a drink and some popcorn and get ready to be “shrunk.”
