02 May A Carbon Fiber Motorcycle – It Was Just a Matter of Time: The BMW HP4 Race
Imagine a carbon fiber motorcycle frame weighing only 17 pounds. BMW has done it. BMW will later this year release a limited number of the HP4 Race Carbon Fiber Motorcycle, their newest, ultra-light carbon fiber motorcycle. The HP4 Race is described as a “pure-bred racing bike,” and is one of the first bikes in the world feature a carbon-fiber mainframe. Add to that some carbon fiber wheels and carbon-fiber track fairings, and you get an incredibly light bike: with fuel and oil, it still only weighs 377 pounds. Sparing nothing when it came to reducing weight, BMW even built the exhaust out of titanium – the lightest metal known to man.
BMW has updated all the intake and exhaust camshafts, as well as the crankshaft connecting rods and intake funnels
There are 8 different mounting positions, so that riders of all sizes can enjoy handling the bike, and the seat is adjustable, setting to three different positions.
The engine puts out a beastly 215hp, and 14,500RPM. The 6-speed close-ratio gearbox is quick, and has been developed purely for track use. It also comes with a quick shifter, BMW’s HP Shift Assistant Pro, which allows you to shift without using the clutch for fast, smooth performance.
The built-in electrical system includes Dynamic Traction Control, Wheelie Control, Engine Brake Retarder, Launch Control and Pit Lane Speed Limiter – all aimed towards track and race use.
Only about 750 of these HP4’s will ever be produced, so if you’re interested – better act quickly. Each one is crafted by hand to be a unique work of art. The price tag looks a little steep, but if you can afford it, the HP4 should be one of the best-performing superbikes every produced.
