Amazon keeps coming up with new devices, and their latest is the Fire TV Cube, which actually has nothing to do with Amazon’s Fire tablet. So what exactly is it? Essentially, it’s a media player – like the Apple TV – but with Alexa. You can ask Alexa to turn on your TV, crank up the volume or change the channel without getting out of your chair – or even using a remote. Because remotes are so old-fashioned. The TV Cube has 8 microphones and beamforming to ensure you’re heard from any direction.
The Cube supports everything from 4k UHD video to HDR, as well as 3d Dolby Atmos audio. You can stream directly from Netflix, Prime Video, HULU, Showtime – virtually any channel you want. Listen to music with Spotify or watch Youtube videos. All while using Alexa – no remote or keyboard necessary.
But is that all this smart device can do? Of course not. The Fire TV Cube can practically control your entire home, turning off lights, controlling the thermostat, even checking your security camera feeds – using Alexa, of course. There’s little she can’t do – except connect to your phone, send messages or take phone calls. Amazon kept this strictly an entertainment device and decided to do a little simplifying.
So, if you’re looking to finish your new “smart home” with an all-around entertainment device, the Fire TV Cube makes an excellent piece to finish off the setup.
